Influence refers to the capacity to affect the behavior, beliefs, or actions of others through direct or indirect means. Influence may be exerted through authority, persuasion, expertise, social position, or the shaping of narratives and environments. In social psychology, it is often categorized into informational influence, where individuals adopt behaviors or beliefs because they believe others possess more accurate information, and normative influence, where individuals conform to group expectations to gain approval or avoid rejection. Influence can be formal, such as that associated with leadership roles or institutions, or informal, arising from charisma, trust, or personal relationships. Scholars such as Robert Cialdini have identified principles that underpin influence, including reciprocity, commitment, social proof, authority, liking, and scarcity. The effects of influence are evident in areas ranging from marketing and politics to cultural trends and interpersonal dynamics, making it a central subject of study in communication, psychology, and sociology.
