New York City, NY is the most populous city in the 📝United States, home to about 8.8 million residents across five boroughs at the mouth of the Hudson River, and the country's leading center of finance, media, and culture.
The city began as New Amsterdam, a Dutch trading settlement established on the southern tip of Manhattan in the 1620s. The English took control in 1664 and renamed it for the Duke of York. New York briefly served as the national capital under the Constitution, hosting George Washington's first inauguration in 1789, and in 1898 Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island were consolidated into the present five-borough city.
The 2020 census counted 8,804,190 residents, more than twice the population of the next-largest American city, and the surrounding metropolitan area holds roughly 20 million people. The city is among the most linguistically diverse in the world, a legacy of its role as the principal gateway for immigration through Ellis Island.
Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange make it a global financial capital, and the city hosts the headquarters of the 📝United Nations. It is also a base for major publishers, broadcasters, and advertising holding companies, including 📝The New York Times, alongside the theaters of Broadway, the museums of Museum Mile, and a large and growing technology and startup sector.
