FAMILY is a six-domain framework for raising kids as a polyamorous parent — decisions to make on purpose, in advance, rather than improvise in a moment you didn't choose.
The six are walked in whatever order your actual week puts them in front of you. There is no sequence and no completion state; a domain comes up when it comes up, and most of them get revisited as kids get older and life changes shape. FAMILY is a working name — it fits the topic, but it stays provisional until the framework has been lived in a while.
The Framework
- F — 📝Frame Your Out(ness) — decide, on purpose, where you sit. Let it be allowed to change.
- e.g. "I'm out. To my family, my friends, basically everyone. That's not a finish line everyone needs to cross — it's just where my life and my risk let me land."
- A — 📝Age It Right — honest, age-appropriate, kid-led. Answer the question they actually asked, not the one you're braced for.
- e.g. to a five-year-old: "I have more than one person I love and go on dates with, the same way you can love more than one friend."
- M — 📝Map the Structure Before They Ask — know your own words for it before your kid needs them from you live.
- e.g. "Logan lives with us — he's my partner, and my nesting partner. X doesn't live here, but she's my partner too. That's not confusing. It's just more people who love you."
- I — 📝Institutions & Information — decide on purpose what schools, doctors, and other parents get told, and keep your paperwork clean regardless of how out you are.
- L — 📝Logistics, Not Ambush — introducing someone to your kids is a sequencing decision, not a surprise.
- e.g. a partner earns "meets my kids" after they've earned "still here in three months" — never the reverse.
- Y — 📝Your Village — go find your people. This terrain is thin. The ones already mapping it are worth finding.
How to Use It
FAMILY is a decision framework, not a script. Each domain names a call that gets made either deliberately or by default, and the whole point is to make it deliberately — the failure mode it exists to prevent is improvising an explanation to your kid in a moment you didn't pick.
It is also not a relationship framework. 📝ANCHORS covers negotiating the relationships themselves — what's yours to hold, what this is, health, who else is in your lives, how you repair. FAMILY covers the parenting layer built around those relationships: what your children see, hear, and can count on. The two are siblings, not substitutes, and a parent practicing consensual non-monogamy is likely running both at once. 📝SOBER sits in the same body of work, doing for substances what this does for parenting.
Nothing in FAMILY assumes you get to be out. Being out is one domain of six, and the framework is built to stay useful at every point on that spectrum — including for parents whose custody situation, job, or family makes privacy the correct call.
I built this because I looked for it a few years ago and it barely existed. Nobody's handed a map for this one — the kink and consent world has frameworks and a whole lexicon, and parenting-while-poly is still mostly word of mouth and a couple of brave Instagram accounts. This is me drawing part of the map.
Each domain above has its own memo with the full treatment. 📝Polyamorous Parenting is the hub for all of them, and the 📝Polyamorous Parenting FAQ answers the questions that tend to arrive before anyone reads a framework.
