Outness is a spectrum, not a verdict. It is a risk calculation crossed with a values calculation, and both are allowed to land somewhere other than where mine did. This is the F of πThe FAMILY Framework β Frame Your Out(ness) β the domain you decide on purpose and let change.
Three Places People Land
Public β family, friends, community, all of it knows. This is where I sit. It costs me almost nothing at this point in my life, which is exactly why it's not a fair bar to hold everyone to.
Selective β out to the people whose support actually matters day to day, and quiet everywhere else: the coworker, the school parent group, the side of the family that would make it a whole thing. This is the most common shape, and it is not half-in. It's a boundary, drawn on purpose, around who gets access to your life.
Private β not out anywhere outside the relationship itself. Often the right call when there's a custody situation that could be weaponized, a job that could be lost, or a family that could become actively unsafe. Private isn't shame. It's information management, and your kids' stability is allowed to be the reason.
The Only Wrong Version
The one nobody chose. Staying quiet out of a fear you haven't actually looked at, or going public before you've thought through who that decision affects besides you. Both are defaults wearing the costume of a decision.
Pick your spot like you mean it. Revisit it when your life changes β a new job, a custody filing, a kid old enough to have their own opinion about who knows what. Outness set once and never revisited is just another default.
Why It's the First Domain
Every other domain in FAMILY inherits from this one. What you tell your kids, what the school gets, when a partner meets your children, which community you can safely go find β each of those answers differently depending on where you've placed yourself here. Deciding the rest without deciding this produces contradictions your kids will notice before you do.
It also means the rest of the framework has to work at every point on the spectrum, not just mine. Nothing downstream of this assumes you're out.
I lead with my own answer because it's honest, not because it's the assignment. If someone reads this and lands on private, the framework did its job. A judgment from someone outside the circle you drew isn't a referendum on the choice you made inside it.
