Interliant (NASDAQ: INIT) was a web hosting and managed infrastructure company. The original Interliant, based in Houston, began as a Lotus Notes / Domino hosting company and in 1997 partnered with IBM's Lotus to co-develop a hosted version of the Domino web server. The combined company hosted websites, applications, and data for other businesses and added managed security and professional services.
Sage Networks, a Cambridge, Massachusetts company that had been rolling up web hosting firms, acquired Interliant and adopted its name in March 1999. A few months later the renamed company went public on NASDAQ, and its shares jumped 68 percent on the first day of trading. After the dot-com bust, Interliant sold substantially all of its assets to NaviSite in 2003 and was later liquidated in Chapter 11. πBrad Feld reflects on the arc in Every Generation Learns The Same Lessons.
I was Director of Mergers and Acquisitions at Sage Networks when we acquired, and then became, Interliant.
