ASA (acrylonitrile styrene acrylate) is a UV-stable engineering thermoplastic filament that replaces the butadiene rubber in 📝ABS with an acrylate phase, making it the default choice for 3D printed parts that live outdoors.

The substitution is the entire point of the material. Butadiene contains carbon-carbon double bonds that ultraviolet light attacks, which is why ABS parts yellow, chalk, and crack in sunlight; the saturated acrylate rubber that replaces it has no such vulnerability. Accelerated weathering places ASA at roughly ten times the ultraviolet resistance of standard ABS. The polymer was developed for automotive exterior trim and remains the industry's default for housings that sit in weather.

Mechanically the two materials are near-equivalent, with ASA giving up a marginal amount of impact toughness in the trade. It runs slightly ahead on heat: 📝Bambu Lab publishes a heat deflection temperature of 100 °C at 0.45 MPa for its ASA against 87 °C for its ABS. Moisture tolerance is also better.

Printing conditions match ABS closely — 240–270 °C nozzle, 90–100 °C bed, an enclosure effectively required to prevent warping and layer separation, and ventilation for the styrene emitted during printing. Spools typically cost 20–40% more than ABS.
