Getting print emissions out of the room you sit in — for anyone running an enclosed FDM printer somewhere they also live or work. Part of 📝Getting Started with 3D Printing.
Decide between filtering and venting
- Vent, do not filter — Filtering ambient air well enough to matter costs far more than ducting the exhaust outdoors. Move the air; do not try to clean it.
- Built-in carbon is partial — An enclosure's activated carbon filter addresses odor and some VOCs. It does not remove ultrafine particles from the room it sits in.
- Every hot-plastic process emits — 📝Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) releases ultrafine particles and VOCs at any temperature, not only at the temperatures that smell.
- Styrene sets the ceiling — 📝ABS and 📝ASA are the materials that make ventilation non-optional. PLA is the mildest and still emits.
Build the exhaust path
- Start with a printed port — A slim external exhaust port guide for the printer's rear vent adapts the factory opening to a duct hose. Free models exist for the common machines.
- Choose the hose first — The hose diameter decides which port model and which window panel you print. Picking it last means reprinting both ends.
- Terminate in a window panel — A printed panel fills the open window gap and carries the hose through it. Model it to your window's real dimensions, not a downloaded STL's.
- Keep the run short and straight — Every bend and every extra foot of hose costs flow. The printer's exhaust fan is small and has no margin to spare.
- Account for the screen — A window screen sits in the track the panel wants. Decide whether the panel goes inside or outside it before modeling.
Gotchas
- Venting cools the chamber — Exhaust airflow pulls heat out of the enclosure, which is exactly what ABS, ASA, and nylon do not want. That trade is real and unavoidable.
- A cracked window is not ventilation — Without a sealed path from the printer to the outside, emissions enter the room first and leave second, if at all.
- The port is a print you need before you need it — The first ABS or ASA print is the wrong moment to discover the exhaust path is still a browser tab.
