1099-inator is a 📝QuickBooks Online add-on, built around 2021 by 📝Weekly Accounting within 📝BrightZen Systems, that automates the collection of W-9 tax information from vendors and independent contractors so businesses can file 1099s by the IRS's January 31 deadline. A business sends each vendor a company-specific link; the vendor completes and digitally signs a W-9, and the data flows directly into the business's QuickBooks Online vendor records. Contractors can also keep a signed W-9 on file and share it securely with new clients.
The tool grew out of a recurring January problem for bookkeepers: chasing contractor tax details in the weeks before the 1099 deadline. QuickBooks Online can e-file 1099s once vendor data is complete, so 1099-inator focused on the collection step that precedes filing, modeling its guided tax interview on the one used by the Amazon Associates program. It was developed on the 📝Crowdbotics platform, priced at $1 per completed W-9 delivered into QuickBooks Online, and credits BrightZen co-founder 📝Jeff Abrams among its creators. Its name nods to the "-inator" inventions of Dr. Doofenshmirtz in Disney's Phineas and Ferb.
