JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM) is a New York–based financial services company and the largest bank in the United States by assets. It operates across consumer and community banking, investment banking, commercial banking, and asset and wealth management, serving individuals, businesses, institutions, and governments worldwide.
The modern firm traces to the 2000 merger of J.P. Morgan & Co. and Chase Manhattan, followed by the acquisition of Bank One in 2004 and, during the 2008 financial crisis, of Bear Stearns and Washington Mutual. In the early internet era the bank ran substantial venture and private equity investing through J.P. Morgan Capital and JPMorgan Partners (formerly Chase Capital Partners), which backed communications, media, and technology companies. In 2006 those investment professionals separated from the bank: the buyout and growth equity team formed CCMP Capital, and the venture team formed Panorama Capital.
My friend 📝John Van Hooser was one of the principals at JPMorgan's venture and private equity arm in the early days of the Internet.
