Movoto is a residential real estate search site founded in 2005 by 📝Henry Shao. It was one of the first sites to put Multiple Listing Service (MLS) listings on an intuitive map augmented with community and school information, and it pairs that search experience with agents who support buyers through browsing, touring, negotiating, and purchasing at the customer's request.
Tokyo-based Recruit acquired Movoto in a deal reported by Inman in February 2014, with the stated aim of making it the leading online real estate service in the US. Movoto became independent again in 2018, was acquired by OJO Labs in 2020, and, according to deal databases, was acquired along with OJO by mortgage lender Lower in 2025.
I became an advisor to Movoto in 2007 as it was entertaining early acquisition offers. After leaving 📝Second Life in 2009, I became a 📝Fractional CFO to Movoto through its sale to Recruit in 2014.
