Mythos

Brandon Sorbom is the Chief Science Officer and a co-founder of 📝Commonwealth Fusion Systems. A 🏷️#physicist based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he holds a BS from Loyola Marymount University and a PhD from MIT, where his thesis examined damage mechanisms in superconductors under charged-particle irradiation.

During his doctoral work at the 📝MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center, Sorbom led the ARC reactor design study and was lead author of the 2015 paper proposing the original 📝ARC design — the conceptual small, modular fusion pilot plant whose high-field pathway inspired the company's founding in 2018. As CSO he stewards the scientific basis of the reactor program, from the physics of 📝SPARC to the peer-reviewed papers validating ARC, and serves as one of the company's most visible public explainers of fusion science, including community Q&As and technical talks.

Brandon wrote the paper we are built on — the ARC design study that turned high-field fusion from a classroom idea into a company, and as our CSO he keeps the science honest as the machines get real.
