The role of peer review in the pursuit of commercial fusion energy is the 2023 Physics of Plasmas paper in which 📝Matt Reinke, 📝Brandon Sorbom and 📝Martin Greenwald argue why a privately funded fusion company should keep submitting its science to outside judgment.
It is the most readable paper in this corpus for a non-specialist, and the only one whose subject is the corpus itself. Fusion research is shifting from near-exclusive public funding toward a mixed landscape including private companies, and peer review — a fixture of the public system, where publication is a condition of the grant — has no equivalent structural requirement in a company. The three authors write from having crossed that boundary personally, from publicly funded programs onto the high-field 📝tokamak path at 📝Commonwealth Fusion Systems.
Their argument is not that publication is virtuous. It is that peer review is the mechanism by which a claim about a machine nobody has built yet acquires standing — and that a field asking for public trust and public capital cannot substitute press releases for it. The paper is equally clear about the limit: some technology development will remain proprietary, and pretending otherwise would be its own dishonesty. Where that line falls is stated rather than elided.
Read against the rest of this library, it is the paper that explains why the rest of this library can exist: 📝SPARC's physics basis and 📝ARC's were both published in advance of results because the authors of this paper believe advance publication is the harder and better claim.
