Fall Line Fusion Power Station is the power station announced for Chesterfield County, Virginia, where 📝Commonwealth Fusion Systems will build 📝ARC, its first commercial 📝fusion power plant.
The name comes from the fall line, the geological boundary where Virginia's Piedmont drops to the Tidewater coastal plain and creates the rapids of the James River. For centuries Virginians built mills at the fall line to harness falling water; the station's name places fusion in that lineage. The site, announced in December 2024, sits in the James River Industrial Park, with the utility 📝Dominion Energy as the company's site and development partner, contributing development and technical expertise.
The plant is designed to deliver about 400 megawatts of zero-carbon electricity — roughly enough for 150,000 homes — with power on the grid targeted for the early 2030s. Its output is already contracted in part: Google and 📝Eni have each signed power purchase agreements for power from the plant. In 2025 the project secured its local conditional-use permit, and the company became the first fusion developer to apply for interconnection to PJM, the largest wholesale electricity market in the United States — administrative firsts that mark fusion's transition from laboratory science to grid infrastructure.
Fall Line is where our mission becomes a power bill: the first place we will sell fusion electricity, on a site chosen where Virginians have harnessed power for centuries.
