A "warlock" generally refers to a man who practices witchcraft, sometimes seen as a male equivalent of a witch or a wizard. Warlocks can be found in folklore, modern fiction, and gaming universes like @Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). Unlike the learned @Wizard, the scholar of esoteric knowledge who studies the rules of the cosmos and then casts accordingly. A warlock has broken an oath—either to a master, to a system, or to their former self. He is the renegade magician, the one who no longer asks permission from the temple. Where the wizard seeks harmony, the warlock seeks liberation. Where the wizard plays within the sacred laws, the warlock rewrites them.
