By acting as a bridge between disparate software tools, Zapier allows users to build "Zaps"—automated workflows that pass data and trigger actions across platforms. Originally celebrated for democratizing automation for non-technical users, Zapier has played a key role in the rise of the no-code movement. As of 2024, Zapier continues to position itself as the go-to tool for scaling business operations without engineering overhead. However, the platform has also received criticism for aggressive pricing changes, limited recovery options for user errors, and customer service challenges, particularly as it expanded its enterprise offerings.

We, One Inc, once ran our entire automation stack on Zapier from 2017 to 2024—50,000+ zaps a month powering everything from invoicing to social listening. It wasn’t just a tool; it was the nervous system of our cooperative. And then, overnight, it all vanished. A flaw in their UX deleted our entire account—seven years of operations, gone. Despite escalation to their executive team (with help from Bill French), the only response was: “You’ll have to rebuild it yourself.” No apology, no compensation. This came after a 600% price increase. That moment broke any remaining trust. We now use and recommend Make for our automations—1/10th the price, better UX, more powerful logic.
Zapier helped us scale, but it also showed us what happens when trust erodes in the tools we depend on.
