Mythos

stewardship is the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one's care — and, in its older sense, the office, duties, and obligations of a steward.

The defining feature of stewardship is that the thing managed is held in trust rather than owned outright. A steward answers to someone else: an employer, a beneficiary, a community, or a future that will inherit what is handed on. That is why the word attaches so readily to shared or long-lived goods — environmental stewardship of land and water, financial stewardship of an institution's funds, the legal stewardship foundations provide for 📝open-source projects, and 📝Community Stewardship of the people and resources that hold a group together. In religious usage, especially Christian, stewardship names the responsible care of time, talents, money, and creation, all understood as held on loan rather than possessed.

The word builds on steward, from Old English stigweard, joining stig, "hall" or "house," with weard, "guard" or "keeper" — the official in charge of a large household's domestic affairs. After the Norman Conquest the office was equated with the French seneschal and rose to a title of high state; the royal house of Stewart took its name from it. Over the centuries the steward's charge widened from a household to an estate, a ship's provisions, and the arrangements of an event, and the suffix -ship turns that role into the condition and practice of holding it.

Stewardship overlaps with 📝Fiduciary Responsibility but is broader and less legal: a fiduciary owes enforceable duties of loyalty and care to a beneficiary, while stewardship is an ethic of care that can apply where no one could sue. It differs from ownership in the direction of accountability, and from management in its time horizon, since a steward is judged by the condition in which things are passed on.

In my work, stewardship means 📝Living Asset Stewardship (LAS): valuing living assets, people and Nature, above money. Every 📝One Inc system carries the same standing goal — 📝Steward Every System as a Living One.
