DoorDash (Nasdaq: DASH) is an American local-commerce and food-delivery platform, founded in 2013, that connects consumers with restaurants, grocers, and other local merchants and fulfills orders through a network of independent couriers it calls Dashers. It serves consumers ordering on demand, merchants seeking online order volume and delivery logistics, and couriers working flexible shifts, and it sells a DashPass subscription that reduces delivery fees.
DoorDash was founded in Palo Alto by Stanford students Tony Xu, Andy Fang, Stanley Tang, and Evan Moore, who began by delivering takeout from local restaurants under the name Palo Alto Delivery. It grew into the largest food-delivery service in the United States by market share, overtaking 📝Grubhub and competing with Uber Eats, the delivery arm of 📝Uber, and it is a standard example of a 📝two-sided marketplace balancing diners, merchants, and couriers. The company went public in December 2020. International expansion came through acquisitions: Finland's Wolt in an all-stock deal completed in June 2022, and the United Kingdom's Deliveroo in a cash acquisition completed in October 2025, which together carry the platform into more than 30 countries. Beyond restaurant meals, it now delivers grocery, convenience, and retail goods, and offers Drive, a white-label delivery service merchants can run under their own brand.
