Mythos

📝Discord launched its first advertising product in April 2024 — less than two years ago. The platform was subscription-only (Nitro) for its entire existence before that. Advertising is estimated at ~$100-150M in revenue (trade press estimates, unconfirmed), still a minority of Discord's ~$890M total revenue (2025 estimate). Nitro subscriptions (~$280M) remain the majority revenue source.

Timeline

  • Pre-2024 — zero advertising. Subscription-only model. Discord's stated philosophy was anti-ads.
  • April 2024📝Quests launched as Discord's first and only ad product. Play Quests (game-based) were the original format.
  • October 2024 — Video Quests added (96% median completion rate)
  • Mid-2025 — Mobile rollout; measurement partnerships with AppsFlyer, Gamesight, Kantar
  • September 2025 — Privacy policy overhaul expanded data collection for ad targeting (third-party behavioral data ingestion)
  • Early 2026 — expanding beyond gaming into Media & Entertainment; still managed-service only, no self-serve

Current State

Discord's ad platform is extremely nascent — comparable to where 📝Reddit was circa 2018-2019. The ad product is promising (opt-in, reward-based, high engagement) but the infrastructure is early: no self-serve, no auction-based buying, limited third-party attribution, gaming-heavy advertiser base. Secondary market valuations compressed to $7-10B (half the 2021 $15B peak) and uncertainty around the IPO timeline may slow investment in the ad stack.

Products

  • 📝Quests — currently the only ad format (Video, Play, Stream, Instant Play, Arena variants)

For advertisers considering Discord: the inventory is growing, the targeting is getting richer, but you're buying into a platform mid-transformation with significant user backlash. Brand safety in the traditional sense (content adjacency) is one concern. Reputational safety — being associated with a platform whose users are actively revolting against its monetization direction — is the newer, less measured risk. The ad product itself is genuinely interesting, but the question is whether the audience will still be there as Discord pushes harder on monetization through its IPO.
