Vikram Gandhi is an American 🏷️#filmmaker and director best known for the 2011 documentary Kumaré: The True Story of a False Prophet — in which he posed as a fictional Indian guru in Arizona to examine the dynamics of belief, charisma, and spiritual authority — and for his subsequent work directing across documentary, narrative film, and prestige television.
After Kumaré's festival run and theatrical release, Gandhi continued in documentary television with HBO's VICE and Showtime's The Circus, then transitioned into scripted directing with episodes of HBO's Barry (the Bill Hader–led half-hour created with Alec Berg), Apple TV+'s WeCrashed and Severance, and Hulu's The Patient. His feature credits include the 2016 narrative film Barry — starring Devon Terrell as a young Barack Obama at Columbia University — released by Netflix. His work consistently returns to themes of constructed identity, performance, and the gap between the public-facing self and the private one.
