Introduction
For many months, I’ve been living with a question:
What is the intention of Brian’s and my relationship?
Not what we call each other. Not where the relationship is going. Not whether we are partners, lovers, or something else.
Those questions have their place, but they never felt like the deepest question.
What I was really searching for was this:
What are we co-creating simply by being in one another’s lives?
Throughout the past 8 months, that question surfaced subliminally... repeatedly through conversations, moments of repair, shared experiences, and countless reflections. I searched for meaning, for language that could capture the essence of our relationship—not through structure, but through function. Not through labels, but through lived experience.
Then, unexpectedly, the truth didn’t emerge as a definition. It arrived as a metaphor.
The Ground We Stand On
Before there is relationship… Before there is love… Before there is mutual becoming… There is authenticity. Not authenticity as something we achieve once and for all. But authenticity as a continual unfolding.
A continual expression of who we are becoming aware ourselves to be. This feels like the ground beneath everything else.
Relational Sovereignty exists so that neither of us is asked to abandon our authenticity in order to preserve connection. The purpose of Relational Sovereignty is not to preserve relationships. It is to preserve the conditions in which authenticity can continue to unfold. The relationship’s form should remain in service of that purpose—not become the purpose itself.
Expansion and Orientation become expressions of love because they support one another’s unfolding rather than asking one another to conform.
Mutual Becoming is what naturally emerges when two people continually create space for authenticity to reveal itself. This also means that connection is not the highest aim.
Authenticity is.
Connection becomes meaningful when it arises through authenticity—not when authenticity is sacrificed to preserve connection. If our paths continue together, may it be because doing so continues to support the fullest expression of who we are. If our paths someday diverge, may that too be an authentic expression of love.
The practice remains the same. To continually become more fully ourselves.
The Intention
The intention of our relationship is not to preserve a particular structure. Nor is it to fulfill predefined roles for one another.
Our intention, I've come to realize, leans heavily towards creating the conditions where each of us becomes more fully ourselves.
This is what I mean by Mutual Becoming Through Relational Sovereignty.
Neither of us is responsible for completing the other. Neither of us exists to rescue, fix, or carry the other. Instead, we practice creating a relationship where honesty, vulnerability, curiosity, challenge, play, repair, reflection, and love become fertile ground for each person’s unfolding.
The relationship itself becomes a living practice. A place where we are continually invited back into greater authenticity, greater sovereignty, and greater love.
Whenever uncertainty arises, this emergent intention is becoming my/our compass. Rather than asking,
“What are we to one another?”
I/we return instead to the deeper question:
“Am I/Are we continuing to create the conditions where each of us can become more fully ourselves?”
If the answer is yes, then I/we can trust the relationship is moving in the direction that matters most.
Big Bang & Polaris
Brian once called me Big Bang.
At first, it felt playful. I'm coming to realize it revealed something true about how he experiences me.
The Big Bang is not a destination. It is the beginning of something new. It is expansion. Possibility. Creation. The moment the universe becomes larger than it was before.
As I reflect on my life, I recognize that this has quietly become one of my gifts.
Whether through WorldKam, Sweet Surrender, or the relationships I cultivate, I am often less interested in helping people become “better” than I am in helping them discover that they are far more expansive than they previously imagined.
Expansion is my nature.
If I am Big Bang… Then who is Brian?
The answer that continues to resonate is Polaris. The North Star.
Polaris does not tell travelers where to go. It does not carry them. It does not rescue them. It simply remains steady enough that others can rediscover their own direction. This is the gift Brian has consistently offered me.
Not solutions. Not certainty. Not dependence. Orientation.
Again and again, when I become activated or disoriented, he reflects something back to me—not to convince me of his truth, but to help me reconnect with my own. He doesn’t take away the work. He illuminates where the work is. His insight which led to a reflection about my nervous system searching for signs that reality was changing became one such moment.
He didn’t resolve my fear. He gave language to a pattern I hadn’t yet fully articulated. From that reflection emerged a pivotal refinement in my practice of 📝Come Back to Myself.
That is the nature of Polaris. Not to lead. But to orient. Not to become my compass. But to help me remember that I already have one.
Together, these archetypes reveal something about the relationship we are consciously creating.
Big Bang expands. Polaris orients.
Expansion without orientation can become untethered. Orientation without expansion can become stagnant. Together, they create both possibility and presence.
Further Reflection
As I continued reflecting, I realized something even more important. These are not fixed identities. They are relational archetypes.
Brian first called me Big Bang because that was how he experienced me in that moment. In return, I recognized him as Polaris because that was the gift he was offering me.
But looking back, I can see that we have both inhabited both archetypes. Brian has expanded my universe in ways I could never have imagined. Through him, I found experiences, questions, and parts of myself that ultimately became integral to Sweet Surrender and my own unfolding.
Likewise, there have been moments where I’ve become Polaris for him—offering reflection, orientation, presence, and helping him reconnect with himself.
The archetypes don’t describe who we are. They seem to describe what love sometimes asks of us. Sometimes love expands another person’s universe. Sometimes love helps them remember where home is.
Mutual becoming isn’t possible because one person is always Big Bang and the other is always Polaris. It becomes possible because, through relational sovereignty, we remain free enough to become what the relationship needs in each moment without losing ourselves in the process.
Why This Matters
I now realize I was never truly searching for a better definition of our relationship. I was searching for a way to understand its contribution. Not what it is. But what it makes possible.
Big Bang and Polaris reminds me that the deepest relationships are not defined by the roles people occupy, but by the unique way they participate in one another’s unfolding.
Some relationships offer comfort. Some offer adventure. Some offer stability. Some offer challenge. The rare ones become living ecosystems where expansion and orientation continually flow between two (perhaps more) sovereign people, allowing each to become more fully themselves without asking either/any to become less of who they are.
That is what I believe Brian and I are creating. Not because either of us is responsible for the other’s growth, but because we have consciously (and unconsciously) been creating the conditions where growth can naturally emerge. This realization extends far beyond our relationship. It reflects a philosophy I find myself returning to across every part of my life.
Whether in Sweet Surrender, WorldKam, my friendships, or my intimate relationships, I am less interested in defining people or relationships by what they are than by what they make possible.
That may be one of the deepest truths I'm starting to resonate with deeply:
The highest expression of relationship is not found in its structure, but in the quality of mutual becoming it cultivates.
This is not to say that Big Bang and Polaris are identities we must live up to. I feel that it is an emergent truth that can remind us of the direction we are choosing, and the kind of relationship we can intentionally choose to keep creating together.
The intention of mutual becoming is not a promise that we will always remain together. It is a commitment that, whether together or apart, we will not ask one another to become less authentic in order to preserve the relationship. If our paths continue side by side, may it be because doing so continues to support our unfolding—not because either of us fears letting go.
________
Current Hypothesis: Emerging 3-Layer Framework
- Relational Sovereignty is the practice.
- Expansion & Orientation are the relational dynamics.
- Mutual Becoming is the emergent outcome.
Conscious relationships appear to move through two recurring relational functions:
Expansion — inviting someone into new possibilities, perspectives, capacities, or ways of being.
Orientation — helping someone reconnect with themselves, their values, their truth, or their direction.
Relationships that cultivate both may create the conditions for Mutual Becoming.
One question remains open for me: are Expansion and Orientation unique to our relationship, or do they represent two universal movements through which conscious relationships cultivate Mutual Becoming? I don’t yet know. Rather than rushing to a conclusion, I want to let lived experience answer that question. If these movements continue to reveal themselves across relationships, friendships, mentorships, and community, then perhaps they are not merely our language—they are expressions of something more fundamental.
Q: “What phenomenon does this framework explain?”
A: It explains how conscious relationships with thyself and with others become catalysts for human development towards flourishing.
