Mythos

A New Earth is a 2005 book by Eckhart Tolle, subtitled Awakening to Your Life's Purpose, that extends the teaching of his earlier The Power of Now from individual presence to a shift in collective human consciousness.

Tolle argues that most human suffering comes from the ego, an identification with thought, possessions, and self-image, and from what he calls the pain-body, an accumulated store of old emotional pain that feeds on conflict. Awakening, in his account, means noticing these patterns as they arise and resting in the awareness behind them rather than in the stories the mind tells.

The book opens with an image of the first flower to appear on Earth, 114 million years ago, as a metaphor for the flowering of human consciousness. A New Earth reached a wide audience in 2008 as an Oprah's Book Club selection, accompanied by a ten-week online class Oprah Winfrey led with Tolle.

I read it after reading The Power of Now. I enjoy listening to the audiobook narrated by Eckhart Tolle, which starts with the first flower blooming upon the planet Earth.
