Sigma Chi is a North American college social fraternity founded on June 28, 1855, at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, by seven undergraduates. It is headquartered in Evanston, Illinois, and reports more than 240 active undergraduate chapters and more than 350,000 lifetime members. Its badge is a white cross, and its motto is "In Hoc Signo Vinces" ("In this sign you shall conquer").
Sigma Chi's programs include the International Balfour Award, given every year since 1929–30 to the fraternity's most outstanding graduating senior. They also include the Balfour Fellowship, which funds graduate students to serve as educational advisors to undergraduate chapters. The Huntsman Cancer Foundation has been the fraternity's preferred philanthropic partner since 2005, and chapters raise money for it through events such as Derby Days. At 📝Clarkson University, a local fraternity called Sigma Chi Iota became the Iota Zeta chapter of Sigma Chi in April 1988. Its founders were resident advisors on campus.
I was a charter member of Sigma Chi at Clarkson from 1987 through my graduation in 1989, and I led the first pledge class of Sigma Chi Iota. When I was at business school, I received a Balfour Fellowship to be an advisor to the Sigma Chi chapter at Harvard.
