A [job](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Job_(role)) is a regular activity performed in exchange for payment, the work through which a person makes a living, whether as an employee, a volunteer, or the founder of a business.
Job overlaps with work, occupation, and career but is narrower than each. Work is any activity that takes mental or physical effort; a profession is the kind of work a person is trained for; and a career is the longer arc that a series of jobs can form. People usually leave a job by resigning or being let go, while they retire from a career. Jobs range in length from temporary odd jobs to lifetime appointments.
