Mythos

Gamma moment of Insight is a phrase 📝John Zdanowski uses for the instant a massive new insight lands, named for the gamma brain waves such an insight is said to stimulate.

Gamma waves are fast neural oscillations, roughly 30 to 100 cycles per second, that neuroscience links with conscious perception, attention, and working memory. EEG studies of insight problem solving, notably the work of John Kounios and Mark Beeman, recorded a rise in alpha- and gamma-band activity about 300 milliseconds before people reported solving a problem by sudden insight rather than step-by-step analysis. The phrase borrows that finding to name the felt "aha" of a breakthrough, as distinct from the gradual understanding that comes from working a problem through.

A massive new insight stimulates gamma brain waves. A concept introduced to me by Seth Blaustein.
