The protagonist of the story is Chance, the gardener. He is the caretaker of a garden in a home. The owner of the home dies, and Chance is evicted.
Chance ends up in a new mansion, the home of the wealthy businessman Ben Rand, where "Chance the gardener" is heard as Chauncey Gardiner. Chauncey is asked what he wants to do, and he replies: "I want to be your gardener."
Ben's response, paraphrased:
That's what every business person is. He works on flinty soil to make it productive. He waters it with the sweat of his brow. He tends to it for family and community. A productive businessman is a laborer in the vineyard.
