Bob Mumgaard is the CEO and a co-founder of 📝Commonwealth Fusion Systems, where he has led the company since its 2018 spinout from the 📝MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center. A 🏷️#physicist and 🏷️#founder, he holds a PhD in Applied Plasma Physics and an MS in Nuclear Engineering from MIT, and BS degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering Physics from the University of Nebraska.
During his doctoral work at MIT, Mumgaard contributed to the design of small superconducting tokamaks using high-temperature superconductors. As an MIT fellow before founding the company, he studied how entrepreneurship, risk-retirement strategies, and private finance could compress fusion's path from laboratory to market — work that produced the MIT collaboration model on which Commonwealth Fusion Systems launched. As CEO he has grown the company past a thousand employees and raised $4 billion, while testifying before Congress on fusion commercialization and representing the industry in national energy policy.
