Mythos

The Accountability Formula is a conceptual framework designed to help individuals navigate the balance between 📝compassion and 📝accountability in relationships, particularly where mental illness or complex family dynamics are present. It proposes that responsibility can be assessed using the equation: Responsibility = Impact – Capacity × Compassion. In this model, “Impact” refers to the harm caused, “Capacity” addresses the ability or insight a person had to act differently, and “Compassion” reflects the understanding or empathy one can extend.

  • Impact: How much harm did the action cause?
  • Capacity: Did the person have the insight or ability to choose differently?
  • Compassion: How much compassion are you able and willing to offer, given the context?

This formula guides individuals to consider not just the outcomes of an action, but also the circumstances and abilities involved, making space for both fairness and empathy. By reframing accountability as a nuanced spectrum rather than a binary judgment, the formula enables more thoughtful responses and healthier boundaries, supporting both healing and integrity in relationships.
