Boris Cherny is the 🏷️#engineer who created 📝Claude Code and leads it as head of Claude Code at 📝Anthropic. Before Anthropic, he spent about five years at 📝Meta as a principal engineer, and he is the author of the O'Reilly book Programming 📝TypeScript.
Claude Code began as an internal tool Cherny built at Anthropic and launched publicly as a research preview in February 2025, growing into one of the company's defining products and the reference point for terminal-based 📝agentic coding. In July 2025 he briefly left for Anysphere, the maker of 📝Cursor, alongside Claude Code product lead Cat Wu, and both returned to Anthropic about two weeks later; Cherny has since said that what he missed was Anthropic's mission. By 2026 he described no longer writing code by hand, instead defining problems and reviewing the output of thousands of 📝Claude agents at a time, as Claude Code added features such as Routines, Code Review sub-agents, and Auto Mode.
