Starlink is a 📝SpaceX product that delivers broadband internet from a constellation of low-Earth-orbit satellites to homes, vehicles, ships, aircraft, and phones in roughly 160 countries and territories. SpaceX launched the first 60 operational Starlink satellites on May 24, 2019 and opened a public beta in late 2020; by June 2026 it had about 10,400 satellites in orbit, roughly three-quarters of all active maneuverable satellites, and more than 12 million subscribers, and in 2025 it earned $11.4 billion in revenue and $4.4 billion in operating income, making it SpaceX's largest and most profitable business. Its role in Ukraine's defense and astronomers' concerns about light pollution and orbital congestion have also made it one of the most politically consequential commercial networks in the world. Starlink serves rural households, remote workers, travelers, maritime and airline operators, and governments, along with ordinary phone users through carrier partners such as T-Mobile.
Key Features
- Residential and Roam — home broadband from a self-installed dish, plus portable plans for RVs, campers, and travelers that move the same service between locations as needed.
- Maritime and Aviation — connectivity for ships and in-flight Wi-Fi for airlines including Emirates, British Airways, Lufthansa, American Airlines, and Singapore Airlines.
- Direct to Cell — satellite text messaging to ordinary smartphones through T-Mobile's spectrum, with voice and data service planned as the direct-to-cell network expands.
- Starshield — a military variant built for national-security customers, offering encrypted communications and resistance to signal jamming through a separate SpaceX unit.
- V3 satellites — larger third-generation satellites launched on Starship, the first of which reached orbit on Starship's first orbital flight on September 28, 2026.
