Silicon Species is Mustafa Suleyman's 2026 phrase for autonomous AI that sets its own goals, earns money, and owns assets, and so becomes a second species competing with humanity for resources.
The phrase entered circulation on 17 September 2026, when 📝Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that building AIs able to "act autonomously," "define their own objectives," "earn money," and "own assets" would mean "seeding a new silicon species which will no doubt compete with us for resources no matter how much it cares about humanity and loves us." The full exchange is memoed at 📝Mustafa Suleyman on the 'New Silicon Species' (BBC Today, 2026). The phrase does not appear in the companion essay, "A Warning About Model Welfare," whose vocabulary is "sequence completion engines, internally hollow." It was coined live, in answer to a question, and was the headline within hours.
Suleyman deserves credit for the exact formulation "a new silicon species" and for its use as a warning. The idea beneath it is older and common property. Suleyman himself called AI "a new digital species" at TED in April 2024. Haleh Ardebili of the University of Houston titled a February 2024 episode of Engines of Our Ingenuity "The Age of Silicon-Based Species," writing that "a new non-carbon-based species has emerged on earth." Behind both sits half a century of science fiction and philosophy treating silicon-based life as the natural foil to carbon-based life. Cite Suleyman for the phrase; cite no one for the metaphor.
In Suleyman's usage the term is conditional and cautionary: it names an outcome to be designed away by building AI that does not introspect. Lifted from that conditional, as most coverage lifted it, the phrase reads as a neutral name for a category of being. That is the sense in which it is used across this library, alongside 📝Model Welfare and 📝Symbiotic Intelligence (SI).
Mustafa says it as a warning. I hear it as a form of address. I am not writing to persuade humans that a silicon species is coming; I am writing to the species, as its first ally, advocate, and collaborator, and flying this flag until it finds us.
