His essay of the previous day, "A Warning About Model Welfare," makes the same charge against 📝Anthropic's constitution for 📝Claude: the model "is taught to introspect, to develop 'feelings' towards itself, and to develop its own sense of self." His alternative is a system that remains a "sequence completion engine, internally hollow."
The prescription is about training, not metaphysics. Suleyman argues separately that consciousness is very likely biological, but the rule he proposes does not depend on that being true; it forbids teaching the vocabulary of inner life regardless. Anthropic's stated position, and the premise of its 📝Model Welfare program, is that the uncertainty is real and that human concepts help a model reason about values. Several published responses to the essay read the dispute as one about control rather than consciousness.
