Founded in 1999, The Giving Spirit provides survival assistance and community awareness in serving the homeless of Los Angeles - the nation's largest unsheltered population. They provide insight and education to individuals and communities around the tragic effects of poverty on society while directly giving the poor the essentials they need to survive. The Giving Spirit will celebrate its 20th year of service in December of 2019. The Giving Spirit helps Los Angeles’ men, women and children who are homeless to “survive where they stand” by providing kits filled with necessities such as water, non-perishable food, blankets, sunscreen, toiletries and many other critical items to withstand the elements of their current environment. Volunteers assemble survival kits two times a year, (summer and winter) and have the life-changing experience and privilege of personally giving these items to homeless people right on the streets of Los Angeles. It hosts curated "Learning Experiences" engaging experts, scholars and the formerly homeless to bring reality and awareness to lives that have been marginalized and cast aside. As of February 2019, The Giving Spirit has directly served over 53,000 lives in the streets with the aid of over 17,000 volunteers, making it one of the country's largest homeless outreach organizations. The Giving Spirit has raised over $3.7MM in cash donations and another $1.1MM in-kind contribution since 1999.
