Hey Legend,

Last week, 📝Where They're At (newsletter) called into our awareness the power of energy modulation as a means of connecting to, and being in support of, others, by syncing with their frequency. This is simple, but it's not easy.

Even Dr. 📝Mark Goulston, a master of such modulation, will readily share stories of the painful missteps that developed his abilities. One 📝reflection of last week's email spoke of a similarly challenging experience. I appreciate the individual who granted it and, later, 📝consented to it being shared here.

"I was not good at coming down for [my ex-partner]. Trying to meet her energy to take care of her while she was down, triggered, and vulnerable. I wasn't resourced enough."

As an outsider to what feels like a painful breakup, two phrases stood out.

The phrase "not good" is a 📝Value Judgment; an evaluation with regard to the values held by the viewing party instead of with regard to their intrinsic traits, objectively considered. In Learning to Philosophise, E.R. Emmett examines phrases like "better than" and their ambiguous meanings.

"Better than, but in what way?" he asks.

While this kind of linguistic philosophy can help to clarify, it cannot always deal with issues and provide answers to real problems. For that, we find wisdom in the second phrase that stood out; "coming down." While this too is a value judgement, it illuminates the need for directional knowledge.

As was explained in the film Stargate (yes, I just jumped from philosophy to science fiction), to find a destination within any three-dimensional space, you need six points to determine the exact location. But, to chart a course, you need a seventh point—a 📝Point Of Origin. What is true for space travel is also true for communication, we must first 📝Know Thyself in order to know others.

"I am the only person in the world I should like to know thoroughly."
~ Oscar Wild, Lady Windermere's Fan, 1891

Like many things in life, this is 📝A Process, Not An Activity. If you've recently been wrong, and had a painful learning experience, know this:

"When one has made a 📝mistake, one says: 'Another time I shall know what to do,' and what one should say is: 'I already know what I shall really do another time.'"
~ Cesare Pavese, The Business of Living, Diaries 1935-50

In the (newly minted) 📝Journey To One: Chat, you can find conversations emerging around various facets of self-knowledge and a growing community of those willing to offer an objective perspective when one is needed.

I'm curious, what, was a defining experience on your path to self-knowledge?

📝Build cool shit and change the world.
