TESCREAL is a 2023 acronym coined by Timnit Gebru and Émile P. Torres for a bundle of seven overlapping futurist ideologies that critics argue function as a single movement rooted in twentieth-century eugenics.

The acronym expands to 📝transhumanism, extropianism, singularitarianism, modern cosmism, rationalism, 📝effective altruism, and longtermism. Gebru and Torres introduced it in a 2023 draft and their April 2024 First Monday paper, "The TESCREAL bundle: Eugenics and the promise of utopia through artificial general intelligence," contending the seven are interconnected, overlapping ideologies with shared progenitors in twentieth-century eugenics. They apply the term "TESCREAList" to anyone who appears to endorse any or all of them.

Critics hold that the bundle gives technologists intellectual cover to prioritize speculative projects—📝artificial general intelligence, life extension, and space colonization—by casting inaction as an existential risk. The discourse divides into "accelerationists," who treat AI as the route to utopia, and "doomers," who fear unaligned AI could drive humanity extinct; Gebru likens the pairing to a secular religion selling both salvation and apocalypse. Detractors argue this fixation on the far future distracts from present harms such as algorithmic bias and environmental damage.

The label is most often applied to prominent figures in Silicon Valley. Marc Andreessen's 2023 "Techno-Optimist Manifesto" has been cited as a prototypical expression; Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, 📝Sam Altman, Nick Bostrom, and Eliezer Yudkowsky have been described as sympathetic to or leaders of these movements, and Altman's 2023 ouster at OpenAI is often read through the accelerationist-versus-doomer lens. The framing is itself contested: self-identified effective altruists and rationalists reject being lumped into what they call a monolithic or conspiratorial caricature that strips distinct, sometimes mutually exclusive philosophies of their context.
