Mythos

Sarah Miller is an American antimonopoly advocate and the founding executive director of the American Economic Liberties Project, described by The New York Times as "central to making the issue [of antitrust] prominent" and one of the primary architects of the modern antitrust movement. She previously served as deputy director of the Open Markets Institute, advised Treasury Department leadership during the Obama administration, and served on President Biden's transition team.

Her method is follow-the-money: Facebook and Google earn their revenue by knowing "absolutely everything" about you and selling micro-targeting "with extraordinary levels of specificity" — the phrase that titled her appearance on "📝Extraordinary Levels," the fourth episode of 📝Everything They Know. There she argues you cannot effectively boycott a monopoly, that the platforms' ad money is what previously financed a free press, and that the individual harms are concrete — black-market opioid sellers targeting recovering addicts, diet-pill makers targeting eating disorders, supercharged housing and age discrimination — which is why the remedy runs through democratic institutions rather than consumer choice: in her view, Facebook and Google should not be in the advertising business at all.

Sarah entered the library through her Everything They Know interview on my friend 📝Ari Andersen's podcast.
