Information architecture (IA) is the practice of organizing, structuring, and labeling content so that people can find information and complete tasks efficiently.
Information architecture is the structural design of shared information environments — websites, applications, intranets, and physical spaces — concerned with how content is organized, categorized, labeled, and connected. It draws on library science, cognitive psychology, and design, and treats findability and understandability as primary goals. The term was popularized for digital media by Richard Saul Wurman and later codified in Louis Rosenfeld and Peter Morville's book Information Architecture for the World Wide Web.
Practitioners work with organization schemes, navigation systems, labeling systems, and search systems, often expressed through artifacts such as sitemaps, taxonomies, content inventories, and card-sorting studies. Information architecture is a foundational layer of 📝User Experience (UX) design: where UX addresses the whole of how a product feels to use, IA specifically governs how a product's information is structured so that users can navigate it without friction.
