The creator economy is a combination of both independent content creators (writers, vloggers, influencers, and so on), as well as the companies that help sustain them. The companies provide the platform, content creation tools, and analytics, while the creators work to monetize themselves and their expertise.
The creator economy was born through the rise of online platforms including YouTube, Instagram, Tiktok, and many more. What started out as sponsored posts gave way to branded shoutouts and continued to grow from there. The problem was, although these platforms allowed content creators to amass a large following, they didn’t really give them much in the way of tools for monetization (YouTube is the exception.)
Some observations on the future of the creator economy are:
Audience = Future Currency. Cash may not be king in the future, your audience will be.
Audience is an Annuity. It is a cash-flowing asset. It continues to pay and unlike an annuity, as they only have one revenue stream, your audience has numerous.
You-Corps. The next wave of companies is and will be creators. We increasingly do not trust institutions so we increasingly may move towards trusting individuals. With the tech onslaught why can’t the next group of Unicorns all be You-Corps. Aka You!
From the Topia team:
Coming this March, you'll be able to get paid real commission money by Topia itself just for having visitors engaging in your world, without needing to charge anyone! Launching World Discovery is super helpful here as it'll expose your world to way more visitors than strictly relying on word of mouth. Worlds will also need to be subscribed in able to earn commissions. We're so excited as this is Topia's first big step towards a much larger system we're working on called the Creator Economy, in which creators of all kinds will be able to turn a profit in new and interesting ways. More details on all this coming soon, but know that we're kicking this off with visitor engagement. So apply for Discovery now and get your world ready for takeoff!
