quench protection is the set of detection and energy-extraction systems that keep a 📝quench — the sudden loss of superconductivity in a magnet — from damaging or destroying the magnet itself.

The term names a system, not a hope: quench protection assumes quenches will happen and engineers for survival. Its two halves are detection and extraction. Detection means noticing, within milliseconds to seconds, that some region of a winding has gone resistive — classically by watching for the small voltage a normal zone develops. Extraction means getting the magnet's stored energy out before the normal zone absorbs it: opening the circuit and dumping the current into an external resistor, firing heaters that deliberately quench the whole coil so the energy spreads over the full winding mass instead of cooking one spot, or both.

The problem is harder for 📝High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) Magnets than for the low-temperature superconductors that preceded them. HTS conductors have such large thermal margins that a normal zone grows slowly and produces only a faint voltage signal, so a quench can smolder undetected while damage accumulates. This drives active research into faster detection — fiber-optic and acoustic sensing among the candidates — and into windings that tolerate quenches by design, such as the 📝no-insulation coil, which gives current a path around a resistive zone rather than relying on external systems alone.
