Superconductors for fusion: a roadmap is the 2021 Superconductor Science and Technology review in which Neil Mitchell and 27 co-authors survey, in a series of short articles, the routes by which superconductor technology could carry magnetic fusion to a commercial reactor.
It is the one paper in this collection written from outside the high-field program looking in, and that is its use. The roadmap's starting point is institutional rather than speculative: 📝ITER was in final assembly and 📝JT-60SA entering commissioning, meaning the field had accumulated real manufacturing experience with 📝low-temperature superconductor magnets at reactor scale. What that experience taught — about cabling, joints, 📝quench protection and cost — carries forward regardless of which 📝superconductor a given program bets on.
The roadmap treats high-temperature superconductors as one route among several rather than the settled answer. Read alongside 📝Commonwealth Fusion Systems's own magnet papers, it supplies the context those papers cannot supply about themselves: the 📝REBCO path is a choice with alternatives, made against a field that had reasons to be cautious. A reader tracing why compact high-field machines emerged when they did should read this before or after the 📝VIPER cable and 📝Toroidal Field Model Coil (TFMC) results, not instead of them.
