Leslie Bromberg is a senior research scientist at the 📝MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center and a 🏷️#physicist whose work on magnet design underpins a defining feature of 📝ARC: demountable 📝high-temperature superconducting toroidal field coils.

In 2001, Bromberg was lead author of "Options for the use of high temperature superconductor in tokamak fusion reactor designs," published in Fusion Engineering and Design, with M. Tekula, L. A. El-Guebaly, and R. Miller. The paper argued that high-temperature 📝superconductors would permit demountable joints in a 📝tokamak's toroidal field magnets, and that the cryogenic penalty for building them that way would amount to only a few percent — a design freedom conventional low-temperature magnets do not allow. Demountable coils let a machine be opened, serviced, and upgraded rather than sealed for life, and the concept arrives fourteen years later as a central premise of the 2015 ARC design paper.
