Hey Legend,
"Contemporary parties are almost always based on 📝consumption—of food, drink, drugs, sports, or other forms of entertainment.
>
[Joint consumption] only passes the time painlessly by covering up a lack, and leaves us feeling all the more empty. The significance of the superficiality of our social leisure becomes apparent when we contrast that sort of "fun" with a very different activity, 📝play.
>
Play is the production of fun; entertainment is the consumption of fun.
>
Only through the latter activity is there the possibility of getting to know each other's strengths and limitations, character, and inner resources. [...]
>
Real intimacy comes not from telling about yourself, but from joint creativity, which brings out your true qualities, invites you to show that aspect of yourself needed for the task at hand."
The passage above—from 📝Charles Eisenstein's book 📝The Ascent of Humanity—shed new light on 📝Symposium; our bi-weekly gathering that, to date, had been loosely defined by its Greek meaning, "to drink together".
Further, the notion resonated with 📝Alex Silkin's suggestion—shared during our brainstorm on the 📝Journey To One: Livestream—to host "potluck-style" events where, instead of the menu, attendees were tasked with cultivating the experience; and not (entirely) as a means to outsource the work.
When we met for Symposium last Monday, we discussed this joint creativity, or 📝co-creativity, and the ways in which we could make space for it to emerge.
We distilled it to three things; purpose, principles, and process.
The purpose will communicate the intention of the event, the principles will act as a framework to guide the interactions within that space, and the process will enable us to synchronize new individuals with this frequency.
In effect, this will be a kind of resonance machine.
While this language is still materializing, yesterday, it was relayed to the team at WeWork's 📝One Culver location. It now seems likely our bi-weekly Symposium will soon have a new home—and sponsor—with plenty of room for activities.
Admittedly, I do dream of a 📝Burning Man-like environment that—instead of emerging from the desert once a year and lasting a week—emerges from a beautiful co-working space twice a month and lasts two hours.
If you feel called to support this endeavor—in any manner—let's sync. You can respond to this email or chat with brian.bot; the AI-me (more on him soon 😉).
