Kevin Mitnick was an American computer security consultant, author, and one of the most high-profile figures in the history of computer hacking. He first gained notoriety for unauthorized access to the Digital Equipment Corporation network in 1979 and later became a fugitive for two-and-a-half years. During this period, he allegedly compromised dozens of computer networks using cloned cellular phones to mask his location. Following his arrest by the FBI in 1995, he served five years in prison, including a period of solitary confinement based on government concerns regarding his technical capabilities. After his release in 2000, he transitioned into a career as a security consultant, founding Mitnick Security Consulting and serving as the Chief Hacking Officer for KnowBe4. He authored several books on social engineering and cybersecurity before his death in 2023.
