Mythos

Wikimedia Foundation is an American 501(c)(3) 🏷️#nonprofit organization founded in 2003 by 📝Jimmy Wales to host and operate 📝Wikipedia and a family of related free-knowledge projects, including Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and Wikivoyage.

Headquartered in 📝San Francisco, CA, the foundation is funded almost entirely by small individual donations solicited through banner-and-email fundraising drives each year, with no advertising on the projects themselves. The foundation provides the legal, infrastructure, and policy backbone for the volunteer editor communities that produce and govern the actual content; its core technical staff maintains the MediaWiki software that powers Wikipedia and its sister projects, while community-elected and chapter-elected bodies handle most editorial governance. Its Wikimedia Endowment, established in 2016 with a $100 million ten-year goal and reached ahead of schedule, is intended to underwrite long-term operations beyond the annual fundraisers.
