Work spouse refers to a co-worker, business partner, or employee—usually the opposite sex—with whom one shares a special relationship, having bonds similar to those of a marriage. [1] Professional marriages, like the traditional counterpart, are characterized by varying degrees of emotional support and functional partnership. When describing a functional partnership, "work spouse" is often a logically minded operational support that balances the rambunctious intensity of their partner; typically fulfilling the role of COO or Sr. Project Manager, these individuals can provide critical grounding for founders. As in an effective marriage, an effective workplace marriage requires a foundation of mutual respect, objective acknowledgement of strengths/weaknesses, and commitment to maintaining honest communication. While this bond, like any marriage, requires time to develop and mature; the process of seeking a partner is simpler in the professional context. @Kathryn Buccelli was the first person I ever hired and became my first work spouse.
