Mythos

American Express (NYSE: AXP) is a globally integrated payments company founded in 1850 offering credit and charge card products, payment processing, and travel-related services to consumers, small and medium-sized businesses, and large corporations worldwide.

The company originated as a freight forwarding and express mail business — a joint-stock merger of three competing cash-in-transit firms — and built its early reputation on the reliable transport of currency, securities, and valuables across New York State and into the American Midwest. It pivoted into financial services naturally: money orders in 1882, traveler's cheques in 1891, and its first charge card in 1958. American Express today operates one of the world's largest closed-loop payment networks, with over 100 million merchant locations globally, and remains a dominant force in premium card products and 📝fintech. Its brand positioning centers on trust, security, and an aspirational membership identity that differentiates it from open-network competitors like 📝Visa and Mastercard.

I was a big fan of American Express back in 2014 when their point system was quite generous, but I don't presently have an American Express card or any strong opinions on their services.
