The Reddit Glossary is a collection of specialized terms used within 📝Reddit that make communication efficient for regular 📝Redditors but may confuse casual users.

Glossary

A

  • Alt — An alternative user account.
  • 📝Ask Me Anything (AMA) — A public Q&A format where a notable person invites the Reddit community to ask them questions.
  • AMAA — Ask Me Almost Anything, a variant of AMA with the caveat that certain topics may be off-limits.
  • At a [0-10] — A scale used in cannabis subreddits to indicate one's level of intoxication, with 0 being sober and 10 being extremely high.

B

  • Benned — A deliberate misspelling of "banned" used by SRS moderators.
  • Brave — A sarcastic expression used to dismiss a comment for simply echoing popular opinions.
  • Brony — A male fan of My Little Pony.

C

  • Cakeday — The anniversary of the day a user joined Reddit, marked by a small icon next to their username.
  • Circlejerk — A group that self-validates shared beliefs while suppressing opposing viewpoints.
  • 📝Crosspost — A post shared across multiple subreddits, often stylized as "X-post."
  • Ctrl-F — Indicates that the commenter searched for a specific reference in the thread.

D

  • DAE — "Does Anyone Else," an appeal to a common feeling or situation.
  • 📝Default (Reddit) — The subreddits that appear on the front page to users who are not logged in.

E

  • EDIT — Indicates a comment has been modified after initial posting, usually followed by an explanation of the change.
  • ELI5 — "Explain Like I'm 5," a request to explain something in simple terms.
  • Ent — Slang for a marijuana user, derived from the tree creatures in Lord of the Rings.
  • ETA — Edited to Add.

F

  • F7U12 — Shorthand for "FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUU," referring to the rage-comics subreddit.
  • Fap — Slang for masturbation.
  • Flair — Customizable images or text that appear next to usernames in certain subreddits.
  • [FIXED] — A remix of an original post, often making the content more accurate or relevant.
  • Forever Alone — Someone without a significant other, often implying limited social skills.
  • FTA — From The Article.
  • FTFY — "Fixed That For You," a humorous edit of a previous comment that changes its meaning.
  • FWP — First World Problems, complaints that are trivially insignificant in a global context.

  • GW — Gone Wild, an NSFW subreddit featuring explicit photos posted by users.

H

  • HIFW — "How I Feel When," a subreddit for GIFs and images that convey specific emotions.
  • Hivemind — The collective opinion or consensus of the Reddit community.

I

  • IAMA — "I Am A," the prefix for posts in Reddit's interview-style subreddit featuring notable guests.
  • IANAL — "I Am Not A Lawyer," a disclaimer used when prefacing non-professional legal advice.
  • IIRC — If I Recall Correctly.
  • IMHO — In My Humble (or Honest) Opinion.
  • IMO — In My Opinion.
  • ITT — In This Thread.

  • 📝Karma — Reddit's point system awarded for upvoted posts (link karma) and comments (comment karma).
  • Karmawhore — A pejorative term for someone who reposts content or panders to popular opinion to accumulate karma.

  • Meta-sub — A subreddit oriented around discussing Reddit itself, such as r/TheoryOfReddit.
  • MIC — More In Comments.
  • Mod — A subreddit moderator with the power to remove posts, manage comments, and enforce rules.
  • MRA — Men's Rights Activist, a member of a social movement focused on addressing discrimination against men.

N

  • Neckbeard — A derogatory term for the stereotypical Reddit user, implying poor hygiene and lack of self-awareness.
  • Ninjaedit — An edit made quickly enough after posting that no asterisk appears, leaving no visible evidence of the change.
  • Novelty Account — An account used for humorous purposes, repeating variations on a joke related to the username.
  • NSFL — Not Safe For Life, a warning for links to extreme gore or disturbing content.
  • NSFW — Not Safe For Work, a warning for links to sexual, violent, or otherwise inappropriate content.

O

  • 📝Original Content (OC) — Content created by the poster rather than reposted from another source.
  • 📝Original Poster (OP) — The person who made the submission being discussed in a comment thread.
  • Orangered — The color of Reddit's envelope icon indicating unread replies or messages.

P

  • Power User — A high-karma user whose username is widely recognized across Reddit.
  • Pun Thread — A series of comments making progressively worse puns related to the original post's theme.

R

  • Reddit Switcharoo — A comedy trope where a commenter deliberately misidentifies the subject of a post for humorous effect.
  • Reddiquette — The formal and informal rules of conduct followed by Reddit users.
  • Relevant Username — A remark noting that a commenter's username coincidentally relates to their comment.
  • Repost — Posting content that has already appeared on the same subreddit, generally viewed with disapproval.
  • RES — Reddit Enhancement Suite, a browser extension that adds features to the Reddit interface.
  • RTFA — Read The Fucking Article.

S

  • 📝Self-Promotion — Posting one's own content to Reddit, subject to community guidelines on acceptable self-promotion ratios.
  • 📝Shadowban — A site-wide ban where the user's activity remains visible to them but is hidden from everyone else.
  • Shitpost — A post that lacks any real value, usually overly stupid, boring, or sensationalistic.
  • SO — Significant Other.
  • Sockpuppet — An alternate account used to express opinions or take actions the creator's main account would not.
  • Spamfilter — Reddit's automated system that filters out posts likely to be spam before they appear in a subreddit.
  • SRD — Subreddit Drama, a meta-subreddit that catalogues conflicts between Reddit communities.
  • SRS — Shit Reddit Says, a controversial meta-subreddit centered around social justice issues and critiquing Reddit behavior.
  • Sub — Short for 📝Subreddit, an individual community within Reddit.

T

  • That's the Joke — Indicates a commenter has redundantly explained humor that was already obvious.
  • THIS — An expression of strong agreement with or emphasis on a previous comment.
  • TIL — "Today I Learned," originating from the subreddit where users share interesting facts.
  • 📝tl;dr — "Too Long; Didn't Read," a brief summary appended to lengthy posts or comments.

W

  • Whoooosh — Indicates that a joke went over someone's head.
  • WIP — Work In Progress.
