A Donut Relationship is a relationship contained within two concentric time-bound agreements: a small inner ring with a specific set of rules and expectations, nested inside a larger outer ring with a broader set.
The inner ring denotes a small time block governed by specific rules and expectations — the container in which the relationship is lived day to day. The outer ring exists within a larger time block and carries broader rules and expectations, framing the longer arc the partners have agreed to.
Because each ring is time-bound, renegotiation is built into the structure by design: when a ring reaches its boundary, the partners re-examine its terms and may renew, expand, or redraw the container, rather than letting expectations drift unexamined.
