Alex Zhukovsky is an 🏷️#engineer who has worked on 📝superconductor magnets at the 📝MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center since 1988. His ORCID record, which registers his given name as Alexander, lists him as a research engineer at the Center from October 1988 to August 2007 and a visiting scientist there since October 2007, and as a consultant to 📝Commonwealth Fusion Systems since November 2019. His published work traces the laboratory's magnet-engineering practice across four decades: high-field NMR magnet technology in the early 1990s, conductor joints for the 📝ITER 📝central solenoid in 1998, and the superconducting magnet systems of the Levitated Dipole Experiment in 2005.

That continuity matters because a 📝REBCO 📝fusion magnet is built on cryogenic, joint and 📝quench-protection engineering worked out on earlier machines. Zhukovsky is one of the 98 authors of 📝The SPARC Toroidal Field Model Coil Program (Paper), carrying an MIT PSFC affiliation, which records the design, construction and test of the 📝Toroidal Field Model Coil (TFMC) between 2018 and 2021. The TFMC numbers in that paper — 20.1 📝tesla peak field on conductor at 40.5 kiloamps, demountable joints at 0.5 to 2.0 nanoohms, a deliberate open-circuit quench at 31.5 kiloamps — are measurements taken on hardware, and they are the reason the eighteen 📝SPARC 📝toroidal field coils of that lineage could be committed to.
