The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is the U.S. laser facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory that achieved the first laboratory 📝fusion 📝ignition in December 2022, releasing more fusion energy from a fuel capsule than the laser energy delivered to it.

NIF is the emblem of inertial confinement fusion, the approach that stands opposite magnetic confinement. Where a 📝Tokamak holds a thin 📝plasma with magnetic fields for seconds or longer, NIF fires 192 laser beams carrying about two megajoules of ultraviolet light into a centimeter-scale gold cavity — a 📝hohlraum — whose X-rays implode a peppercorn-sized capsule of frozen deuterium-tritium fuel. The fuel's own inertia confines it for the nanoseconds the burn requires. On December 5, 2022, a shot delivering 2.05 megajoules produced 3.15 megajoules of fusion yield — the first time any laboratory device crossed 📝scientific breakeven, with subsequent shots roughly doubling that yield.

The achievement is precise in scope. Ignition at NIF measures fusion yield against laser energy on target, not against the roughly 300 megajoules the facility draws from the grid per shot, and NIF fires at most a few shots per day — it is not a power-plant prototype. Built for the National Nuclear Security Administration and completed in 2009, its primary mission is stockpile stewardship: validating the physics of nuclear weapons without explosive testing. Its ignition results nonetheless settled a foundational question for all fusion energy — that laboratory ignition is possible.
