ARPA-E fusion programs are the U.S. Department of Energy's advanced-research programs that fund early-stage, high-risk 📝fusion innovation through the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy.

ARPA-E, modeled on the Pentagon's DARPA and operating since 2009, backs energy technologies too immature or too risky for conventional funding. Its fusion portfolio is distinct from the Department of Energy's mainline Fusion Energy Sciences program: where FES supports established science and, more recently, pays companies toward pilot-plant designs, ARPA-E places small, aggressive bets on concepts that could dramatically lower fusion's cost — and accepts that most will fail.

Three named programs define the portfolio. ALPHA, launched in 2015, explored lower-cost paths at intermediate 📝plasma densities, including magnetized target fusion. BETHE — Breakthroughs Enabling THermonuclear-fusion Energy, launched in 2020 — funds the maturation of lower-cost confinement concepts alongside component technologies that can be shared across approaches. GAMOW, launched the same year jointly with FES, addresses the enabling technologies every plant will need: materials, magnets, fuel-cycle systems, and power handling. Several teams first funded through these programs later incorporated as private fusion companies, making ARPA-E one of the quiet seedbeds of the commercial fusion industry.
